PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The Homebuilders Association of Southwest Missouri is proud to be a part of this region and of this nation’s social and economic backbone. With the tragic events that occurred on September 11, 2001, it remained to be seen what would happen with the nation’s social and economic status. What appears to be happening is a growing strength in the home building business and community interactions.

The HBA of Southwest Missouri is experiencing an increase in both new members as well as participation in events by present members. The membership is composed of builder members and associate members who work together to help the homeowner build the home they have chosen. It is from this cooperative interaction that a strong home is built.

It is through these same types of interactions that a strong community and economy is built. The HBA of Southwest Missouri has always been involved in the region’s community activities. The most highly visible is the annual Home Show. This event allows the public to spend three days viewing the latest products and services available to them for the construction of that new home or remodeling of their existing home. Builder members along with the associate members are on hand to help answer the questions that are so important when choosing the craftsmen and products that will go into a building project.

Another highly visible event sponsored by the HBA is the Parade of Homes. Each fall, builder members are asked to showcase their projects for the public. This is an excellent way for the public to view the quality of each builder and to see what new products are being used in today’s homes.

These are the events that are the eye caters, but it’s the ones that are not always heard about that the members and staff of the HBA are most proud of. This past year saw a number of these projects take place. The Association contributed over $10,000 to a member’s family to help defray medical costs in their son’s recovery from a serious car accident. The Community Clinic of Joplin was the recipient of free labor and materials from the HBA to help remodel a much needed space in their facility. Through a joint effort with the area trade schools and HBA member Playground Plus funds were raised and donated back to these schools for the purpose of strengthening their programs. This year the HBA will be looking into helping the Boys and Girls Club build much needed office space at their existing facility.

These are a few of the social benefits of a strong HBA, but what about the economic benefits to the community? It is reported in a recent issue of Nation’s Building News that “Housing is crucial to the performance of the US economy, accounting for nearly 14.3% of the nation’s gross domestic product or about one out of every seven dollars spent in the US each year. It is vital to local and state economics, creating jobs and generating taxes and wages that positively influence the quality of life.” The beneficial impact of new home sales lasts far beyond the initial sale, according to the report. In the first twelve months following the purchase of a new home, owners spend an average of $8900 furnishing, decorating and improving it.

The membership and staff are dedicated to serving not only the association, but the communities in which we live and work. As long as we maintain our quality standards and endeavor to reach out to the community through various projects, we will continue to be an important part of this region’s social and economic character.
